Colts vs Chiefs History: Series Record and 2026 OT Recap

Colts vs Chiefs History

The Colts lead the all time series, 18-12, across 30 meetings that include five playoff games. The Indianapolis Colts hold that 18-12 lead, and the two teams have met 30 times, five of them in the postseason.

That lead is shrinking. Kansas City beat Indianapolis with an overtime field goal for the second straight year on Sunday night. The 33-30 result on Sept. 20, 2026, moved the Chiefs to 2-0 and left the Colts at 0-2.

This guide gives you the full record, every playoff clash, the last decade, and a clear look at what the latest game means for both teams.

What Is the Colts vs Chiefs All Time Record?

Short answer: The Colts lead 18-12. Indianapolis has also outscored Kansas City 652 to 640 across the series.

Those totals hide three very different stretches. Going through the game log, here is how the series split:

  • 1970 to 1985: The Chiefs led 6-3, and most of those games involved the Baltimore Colts.
  • 1990 to 2014: The Colts won 13 of the 15 matchups.
  • 2016 to 2026: The Chiefs are 4-2, including a playoff win.

The series is close on points and lopsided by era. That is why it feels like Kansas City is catching up.

How Did the Colts and Chiefs Series Unfold?

The early years (1970 to 1985)

The first meeting came on Sept. 28, 1970, when Kansas City beat the Baltimore Colts 44-24. The Colts moved to Indianapolis in 1984. The Chiefs won 20-7 in 1985.

The Peyton Manning years

Indianapolis owned this period. In the 2003 playoffs, the Colts won 38-31 in a game famous for having no punts. The Chiefs got one back in 2004. Kansas City won 45-35 even though Manning threw for 472 yards and five touchdowns, because Priest Holmes ran for 143 yards and three scores.

The Andrew Luck stretch

The Colts won in 2012 and 2013, and then came the playoff game that Indianapolis fans still talk about. It gets its own section below.

The Patrick Mahomes era

The Chiefs won 30-14 in Indianapolis in 2016. Then Mahomes arrived, and the games got tighter. Kansas City won a 2018 playoff game, the Colts took regular season games in 2019 and 2022, and the Chiefs won overtime thrillers in 2025 and 2026. By my count from the game log, Mahomes is 3-2 against Indianapolis.

Why the 2014 game matters

People search for the “2014 playoffs” because the 2013 season’s wild card game was played on Jan. 4, 2014. It remains the best game in the series. Andrew Luck threw for 443 yards and four touchdowns, and T.Y. Hilton caught 13 passes for 224 yards. The Colts trailed by 28 points in the third quarter and still won by one. Alex Smith threw for 378 yards and four touchdowns in a losing effort.

The 2018 result flipped the script. Mahomes threw for 278 yards and Damien Williams ran for 129 yards and a score in a 31-13 Chiefs win. Source: Facebook

In the 2025 meeting, Mahomes threw for 352 yards while Kansas City rallied from an 11 point deficit, and Harrison Butker’s fifth field goal won it. Both of the latest games ended with a Butker kick.

Chiefs 33, Colts 30: What Happened in Week 2?

Short answer: Mahomes led a comeback, the game went to overtime tied at 27, and Butker’s 40 yard field goal as time expired won it. Butker kicked two field goals in overtime, the second one a 40 yarder set up by Mahomes and running back Kenneth Walker III.

Key plays and numbers

The lead changed hands almost a dozen times. Indianapolis opened with a 65 yard touchdown drive, and the two teams traded leads or ties nearly a dozen times. Mahomes hit Tyquan Thornton for 45 yards on third and 11, and then found Jalen Royals for the young receiver’s first career touchdown on fourth down.

Here are the numbers that mattered:

  • Mahomes: He completed 32 of 47 passes for 382 yards and three touchdowns. The box score lists no interception for him.
  • Walker: He ran for 117 yards.
  • Kelce: He caught nine passes for 101 yards and a touchdown.
  • Colts offense: Jonathan Taylor ran for 92 yards and two touchdowns, and Daniel Jones threw for 210 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

The overtime sequence

Thornton made a 30 yard catch on third and 12 from the Chiefs’ own 30 on the first overtime possession. Butker then kicked a 31 yard field goal, and Kansas City thought it had won. Indianapolis’ Laquon Treadwell fumbled after a 48 yard catch, but a review ruled him down by contact. Kansas City ChiefsYahoo Sports

The Colts still had to score. They settled for Spencer Shrader’s 38 yard field goal to tie it at 30. On fourth and 8, they chose to play for the tie instead of going for the win. That choice is easy to second guess. It handed Mahomes the ball with 3:11 left, and the tying kick came with 3:11 remaining.

Mahomes and the overtime record

Mahomes is now 8-0 in regular season overtime games. He is 10-2 including the playoffs, the best mark for any quarterback with at least 10 overtime starts. NBC said the game drew 24.3 million viewers, the most for a Week 2 Sunday Night Football game since 2015.

Injuries That Matter for Both Teams

Colts receiver depth takes a hit

Indianapolis is placing Alec Pierce on injured reserve after he aggravated his surgically repaired left heel. The earliest he can return is Week 7 at Minnesota, and he will miss games against Houston, Washington, Pittsburgh, and Tennessee. The Colts signed veteran receiver Darius Slayton to help fill the gap.

That leaves Josh Downs, Keenan Allen, and rookie Deion Burks carrying more weight in the passing game.

The secondary is thin

Charvarius “Mooney” Ward left with a groin injury, and Sauce Gardner briefly left with a midsection injury before returning. Justin Walley and Cam Taylor-Britt played outside, and undrafted rookie Kapena Gushiken filled in at nickel. Against an offense like Kansas City’s, that depth was tested all night.

The Chiefs came out of the game without a headline injury on my radar, so their focus turns to health and execution.

What Comes Next for the Chiefs and Colts?

Chiefs: Kansas City visits the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium at 1 p.m. ET on CBS. After last year’s torn ACL and a down season, Mahomes looks fully back, and the Chiefs have won back to back primetime games. Later, the Raiders (Oct. 4), Chargers (Oct. 18), and Broncos (Nov. 1) fill out the AFC West stretch.

Colts: Indianapolis hosts the 0-2 Houston Texans at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday. The Colts have dropped nine straight games dating back to last season. The Commanders, Steelers, and Titans follow, so a first win needs to come soon.

The Chiefs’ franchise history gives them a cushion. They have reached five Super Bowls in seven seasons and won three. The Colts have their own Super Bowl XLI title. For now, momentum sits in Kansas City.
