COD Modern Warfare 4
Activision has framed this one as an ending. When the new campaign trailer landed during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show broadcast on September 17, 2026, the official COD Modern Warfare 4 Call of Duty account invited players to witness the epic conclusion — language that has fans reading the game as the closing chapter of the storyline that began with the 2019 reboot, turning the sub-series into a quadrilogy. Modern Warfare 4 releases on October 23, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, and will not be available on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. It is the twenty-third entry in the Call of Duty franchise and the direct sequel to Modern Warfare III, announced on May 28, 2026.
One correction worth making early, because plenty of coverage gets it wrong: this is an Infinity Ward game, not a Sledgehammer Games one. Sledgehammer and Treyarch are both credited among the supporting studios, alongside Raven Software, Beenox, High Moon Studios and others, but development is led by Infinity Ward.

Why is Modern Warfare 4 being called the final entry?
Short answer: Activision’s own marketing calls it a conclusion, and the wider release strategy backs that up.
The rebooted Modern Warfare series has run four games across seven years. The current game follows Modern Warfare 3 and the storyline introduced when the franchise was rebooted in 2019, and every signal points to it closing that arc. What “conclusion” means in practice — the end of a character’s story, or the retirement of the sub-series — hasn’t been spelled out. Windows Central
There’s a business logic underneath it. Activision confirmed it would stop shipping back-to-back releases from the same Call of Duty universe, after doing exactly that with Modern Warfare II and III, then Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7. If Modern Warfare 4 is the last of the run, the pattern holds. PCGamesN
The story so far: a three-game recap
Modern Warfare (2019)
The reboot reintroduced Captain Price and rebuilt Task Force 141 from scratch, centring the conflict on the fictional nation of Urzikstan and its fight against occupying Russian forces. It reset the timeline entirely — these are not the same events as the 2007–2011 trilogy.
Modern Warfare II (2022)
Task Force 141 and the Mexican special forces unit Los Vaqueros pursue terrorist leader Hassan Zyani after he acquires American-made ballistic missiles. The game’s real turn is General Shepherd’s betrayal and the deployment of Shadow Company as a private army operating outside the chain of command.
Modern Warfare III (2023)
Vladimir Makarov moves against Western targets while Price and 141 try to stay ahead of him. The critical beat for the new game: Shepherd is assassinated, and the fallout from that killing leaves 141 exposed.
What happens in the Modern Warfare 4 campaign?
Short answer: A North Korean invasion of the South, and a Captain Price who is no longer operating with anyone’s permission.
War erupts on the Korean Peninsula as North Korea launches a full-scale invasion. A young squad of South Korean soldiers fights to survive on the collapsing front lines while Price, half a world away, runs a personal war from the shadows and stays ahead of the people hunting him. When his off-book mission collides with the forces behind the invasion, the conflict spreads beyond anyone’s control.
The Tokyo Game Show trailer went further, showing Price in conflict with former allies and forming an alliance with a former enemy, and introducing a catastrophic weapon that could overturn the world order in the hands of an antagonist named Archer.
Mission variety is broader than the marketing beats suggest. The campaign spans trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters fighting in New York, chases through Paris, SAS night raids in Mumbai and city-wide assaults to retake occupied ground. Narrative director Jeff Negus has described wanting the story to feel current, pointing to the role US troops stationed in South Korea would play in a real Northern attack. Source: Activision
Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone
Multiplayer is being pitched as grounded and precise, with fluid movement and player control at the centre. DMZ returns, casting players as an off-the-books asset behind enemy lines where each deployment forces choices about what to secure and when to leave.
Co-studio head Mark Grigsby has said the movement rework came directly from player feedback on Modern Warfare II, where movement felt restrictive.
On the battle royale side, Warzone featured in the beta’s second weekend with Zodiac, a new Resurgence map in the vein of Rebirth Island or Fortune’s Keep, and Infinity Ward has confirmed a large new Warzone map is coming as well. Warzone support on eighth-generation consoles ends with the integration.

What the beta told us
| Phase | Dates | Platforms | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early Access | Aug 21–25, 2026 | PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC | Pre-order or code |
| Open Beta | Aug 28–Sep 1, 2026 | Above + Nintendo Switch 2 | None |
Early Access ran August 21–25 for pre-order holders, with the open beta following from August 28 to September 1 across all supported platforms. It offered 19 weapons, modes ranging from 3v3 skirmishes to large-scale tactical battles with tanks, Search & Destroy, the new Kill Block experience and a Training Mobility Course. A campaign mission, “Entrenched,” was also playable.
The useful signal here was responsiveness — Infinity Ward pushed changes between weekends based on feedback rather than waiting for launch. That’s not a guarantee of quality, but it’s a better sign than a beta that ships and sits.
Editions and pre-order bonuses
There are three editions: a digital Vault Edition, a digital Standard Edition, and a physical Standard Edition on console only. The Vault Edition bundles the Hostile Alliance Operator Pack (Price, Valeria, Ghost and Blix), the Special Forces Operator Pack, a five-weapon Signature Weapon Collection, one season of BlackCell and a DMZ Deployment Bonus.
Two money notes worth knowing:
- A 10% Loyalty Discount applies to Vault Edition pre-orders for players who have owned and played a qualifying premium title going back to Modern Warfare (2019). It does not apply to later upgrades.
- Upgrading from Standard to Vault after the fact costs $30 USD, and physical pre-orders aren’t eligible to upgrade at all.
The Inner Circuit M4 blueprint
Every digital pre-order unlocks the “Inner Circuit” M4 Assault Rifle blueprint. Xbox Series X|S pre-orders see it in a translucent OG Green treatment marking 25 years of Xbox, while PS5, Steam, Battle.net, Switch 2 and Xbox on PC pre-orders get a mil-spec finish. Both perform identically — the visual is platform-specific, not selectable.
The build equips five attachments tuned for mobility and mid-to-close range:
| Attachment | Effect |
|---|---|
| 11.5″ Shortline Barrel | Improves handling and mobility, costs recoil control and range |
| FTAC Dominion Muzzle | Compensator reducing vertical and horizontal recoil |
| FSS Fireline Grip | Steadies the firing track; slows aim-down-sights snap |
| SZ Prima-4 Dot Optic | Slim dot for a clear sight picture |
| ZLR ASP50 Stock | Retractable stock cutting weight for speed |
It’s a genuinely usable loadout rather than a cosmetic-only reward — a short-barrel M4 paired with a sniper secondary is a legitimate opening build.
Is Modern Warfare 4 on Xbox Game Pass?
No. Activision states plainly that the game will not be available on Game Pass at launch, and Xbox’s own product FAQ confirms it isn’t Game Pass eligible — players need either the Standard or Vault Edition.
This is the point where a lot of Xbox owners get caught out. Microsoft owns Activision, but the premium Call of Duty release is still a separate purchase.
What comes after: Call of Duty 2027
Short answer: Nothing is official, but the reporting is consistent.
Call of Duty 2027 is expected from Sledgehammer Games, and it’s anticipated to launch a new sub-series — the studio’s first fresh identity since Vanguard. Reports describe a project that isn’t another Black Ops, Modern Warfare or Advanced Warfare, with new characters and a heavy movement focus, though its setting is disputed: one report placed it in the late 1990s or early 2000s, while CharlieIntel has said it remains modern-era. Activision has not announced it, so all of this stays unconfirmed.
Should you pre-order?
An honest read: pre-ordering buys you three things of real value — Campaign Early Access on October 16, the Inner Circuit blueprint, and the 10% Vault discount if you qualify. None of those survive launch day.
Against that, the franchise is coming off a period of visible fatigue, with two Modern Warfare games and two Black Ops games shipped in close succession. If your interest is mainly multiplayer, waiting a week costs you very little and lets you read launch impressions first. If you’re here for the story conclusion, the October 16 head start is the strongest single argument for committing.
